There is a significant difference between what happens when the clutch master cylinder and the slave pump are damaged:
Clutch master cylinder damage. When the clutch master cylinder is damaged, depressing the clutch will feel soft and weak, and the pedal travel may be normal, but the usual resistance will not be felt when depressed. In this case, forcing it into gear may increase wear.
Clutch sub-pump damage. When the clutch sub-pump is damaged, depressing the clutch may feel hard or soft, or the travel may be too short, resulting in the clutch not being fully engaged. In this case, shifting gears may be difficult and disengagement incomplete.
Additionally, a damaged sub-pump may be accompanied by an oil leak, whereas a damaged master cylinder is less likely to leak.
